If I was forced to chose my most favourite of summer I would chose peaches. I mean really forced, like against my will, because choosing between summer fruit is like picking favourites between your kids.
Peaches are just starting to make an appearance at our farmer’s markets. But I’ve got an inside scoop on peaches, my super duper friend Lianne lives on a peach farm. She texts me to fill me in on how those peaches are doing. Like I said, she’s a great friend.
Late last week it was all systems go for peach peaching and we scampered down Niagara way to visit, play and get our fill of peaches. They are still firm but while I wait for them to ripen up on my counter I thought I better be ready to use them up. Peaches don’t keep. Which might be why I love them so much.
For most recipes peaches need peeling, the simplest way to do that is to give the skin a poke with a paring knife, plunge them into boiling water for a few minutes. Drain, let cool and peel. Then eat them up.
Best Recipes for Maximum Peach Enjoyment
1. Grilled Peaches with Cold Noodles from Thug Kitchen. Thug Kitchen might not be work place friendly but she knows good eats.
2.Peach Crisp from Beauty in the Mess. Her recipe is gluten free, which suits me fine. Easily converted to wheat flour if you prefer.
3. Peach Sorbet. My youngest is not eating dairy now and that’s a rough go for a 6yo in ice cream season so we’ve been doing a lot of homemade sorbets. I added a vanilla bean to the simple syrup. If you want a proper iced cream recipe check out Alton Brown’s Burned Peach Ice Cream.
4. Peach Salsa from Cravings of a Lunatic. Peach salsa is so versatile, eat it with a pork roast or a grilled cheese. Like a fancy grilled cheese with brie, oohh that’s a good idea.
5. Each Peach Pear Plum Flan, my go to never fail dessert. Tasty and uses up all the ripe and ready to eat fruit on your counter.
